Yaese

Yaese (八重瀬町, Yaese-cho^?) is a small town located in the south of the main island of Okinawa Prefecture. It was formed at the beginning of 2006 by a merger between the town of Kochinda (東風平町, Kochinda-cho^?) and the village of Gushikami (具志頭村, Gushikami-son^?). Although Yaese is quite rural, it borders several larger towns (notably Haebaru and Itoman) and is only about a 30-minute drive from central Naha.

[edit] To/from the airport

The Naha airport is about 30 or 40 minutes from Yaese by car. If you take a taxi, you can expect to pay 2000-3000 yen. It is also possible to reach the airport via public transportation; the simplest way is to take a bus to the Naha central bus terminal, and then take the monorail from Asahibashi station to the airport.

Several bus lines run through Yaese. A one-way trip between Yaese and the Naha central bus terminal costs about 500 yen.

Yaese is easily accessible from the Haebaru-minami (南風原南) interchange of the Okinawa expressway.

Although it is technically possible to survive in Yaese without a car, it is not recommended. Public transportation is limited, and many basic necessities are not within walking distance; in the Gushikami end of town, there isn't even a grocery store anymore.
