This article is a suggestion for a standard lesson plan for preschool.

Greeting[]

Get everyone in a circle and holding hands. Start of in a whisper. The kids will know to whisper back.

  • "Good morning everyone."
  • "Good morning Nani."
  • "How are you today?"
  • "I am fine thank you. And You?"
  • "I am fine, thank you."

Repeat this about four or five time. Each time get louder until at the end you are yelling. It is a really fun way for the kids to start the lesson.

Warm Up[]

Get the kids moving and speaking English. TPR warm-up-ish activities work very well at preschools. You can also throw in flash card review in the warm up.

New Vocabulary[]

Five new vocabulary items is a good amount of new items for three to five year olds. Repeating each item at least five times gives them enough to recall it later in the lesson. Pay close attention to pronunciation - at this age it is relatively easy for them to hear the correct English sounds.

Trouble with Concentration?[]

If you find that from the new vocabulary to the next activity, the children are having trouble concentrating, then try moving the warm up to after the new vocabulary review. This will get them running around after they have sat down for five to ten minuets, so it gets them ready for the next activity.

Review[]

Review new vocabulary using the games that were used when they were learnt, or new games.

New Vocabulary Consolidation[]

A standard game for this age to review vocabulary is Fruit Basket. It keeps everyone listening and also allows them to run around. There are other games to use of course. Have a look at Category:Preschool for more ideas.

Get Feedback[]

As much as possible try to talk to your JTE about how the lesson went. if language is a barrier, then you might be a ble to try the Feedback Form (in Japanese).
