Coordinators for International Relations (国際交流員 kokusai kōryūin?) or CIRs are employed all over Japan in prefectural, city, town and village offices, Boards of Education and international exchange associations. Their work is to assist with various local international exchange activities with the aim of exposing Japanese society to multi-cultural, multi-lingual experiences in an increasingly international world. Examples of such activities include Elementary and Junior High school visits, evening language or cooking classes and cultural lectures. Translation and interpretation also for part of CIRs daily work.
