Biei (美瑛町 Biei-chou) is a small town located in the center of Hokkaido Prefecture with a population of about 11,000 people. Biei is just south of Asahikawa, the second largest city in Hokkaido.
Most places in Biei are accessible by walking or bike. You are not allowed to drive to work.
Biei Station is about a 20 minute walk from the current ALT appartment. Trains run about every hour to Asahikawa and Furano.
Asahikawa Airport is accessible by bus from Biei Station. New Chitose Airport is accessible by train from Biei Station, with a train change at Asahikawa.
There is currently one JET ALT in Biei and one ALT hired directly by the Biei BOE. ALTs here teach at elementary and junior high schools.
Biei is a tourist town, made famous by the photography of Shinzo Maeda and the use of several Biei landscapes in popular commercials and advertisements. If you want to look at famous trees, you've come to the right place.
Biei is a small town with few options for shopping. Many people travel to Asahikawa for their shopping needs.
A rather small grocery store with not a lot of options, but many local farmers sell their fruits and vegetables here for quite cheap prices.
