Many Japanese use English acronyms but don't know what they mean. Things like CDs and DVDs are everyday items. When going through these with your students, first practice the vocabulary that goes with asking such a questions ("Do you know what ____ means?" "It means ____.")

Here are a few that you can test your students with.

Do you know what NTT means? It means Nippon Telephone & Telegraph.
Do you know what OL means? It means Office Lady.
Do you know what SMAP means? It means Sports, Music And People.
Do you know what NBA means? It means National Basketball Association.
Do you know what JHS means? It means Junior High School.
Do you know what SHS means? It means Senior High School.
Do you know what JR means? It means Japan Railways.
Do you know what UFO means? It means Unidentified Flying Object.
Do you know what UK means? It means United Kingdom.
Do you know what JAL means? It means Japan Airlines.
Do you know what AKA means? It means Also Known As.
